Vitalism and Mechanism – A tale of two philosophies

There are two philosophies with regard to health care. Spend any time with a practitioner here in Tacoma and you can probably tell which one they operate from. Whether it is mechanism or vitalism. Mechanism perceives the body as a machine, albeit a very complex one. What are the qualities of a machine? They tend to breakdown, and require regular maintenance to fix them. We replace these parts with little difficulty in the event of breakdown. The problem with the machine is often due to a failure in one part that, when replaced, will fix the problem. This would be analogous to organ transplants in the human body. It is, in effect, very symptom based, and the symptoms are often

The Evils of Medication

I prefer not to take medication. This is due to a number of things, including a personal philosophy and also scientific facts about drugs. I believe that the body functions better without micromanaging our chemicals. Most of those chemicals also have euphemistically termed “side” effects that are then managed with more chemicals. Also, more often than not, they treat merely the symptom, and not the disease itself. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation, a necessary component in healing. It may also reduce sperm count in otherwise healthy men. Proton Pump Inhibitors to reduce acid reflux can cause worse problems as they allow for greater rates of bacterial infection and digestive problems. Use of antibiotics can interfere with normal gut flora leading to leaky

The Goal of Chiropractic

Ask different chiropractors, or doctors, what the goal of a treatment is. The answer you get won’t vary too much in the broad sense: it’s usually to treat a disease, get rid of pain, or otherwise remove a symptom. But I look at Chiropractic in a different way. Indeed, all truly wellness endeavors aren’t seeking to correct a problem necessarily, but to allow the body to function normally. This method of thinking operates on a different assumption than most western medicine practices. It assumes, at the most basic and fundamental level, that there is an inherent wisdom to the functioning of the body that is continuously trying to keep it healthy, to enhance our health, and to have us function

Chiropractic for kids, what are the benefits?

Why do we adjust kids? Especially when they have nothing going on? Well first off, kids often do have stuff going on and much of it runs under the radar of most people. They’re constantly trying to adapt to ever changing circumstances. Think about it. When you are an adult, your body doesn’t change a whole lot. Although as you get older, some things will change but not quickly. As a child, your body will continue to grow and change for up to 25 years before it finally settles into the shape and size that it will be, more or less, for the rest of your life. There are physical changes, emotional changes, hormonal changes, mental changes, you name it.

Best… Adjustment… EVER!

As you guys know by now I’m a huge advocate for wellness care, for receiving chiropractic even when you have no obvious symptoms. Because of this philosophy, I get adjusted every week. When you have no obvious pain or symptoms, it’s not as immediately obvious why you should get adjusted. Most of us tend to think we don’t need any help if we aren’t having any symptoms. That there is no upward mobility in cases like that. Really, how much better could you feel? I felt physically strong, limber, flexible. I had no pain, workout had gone well that day. Mentally I felt sharp. Emotionally I was feeling good, and it was a great day. I was happy. So what

Barefoot is best!

I’ve been wearing barefoot shoes for at least 7 years, ever since I was exposed to them. As a Chiropractor, and especially as one who greatly values a natural approach to health, it made sense that feet were made to walk and to support our weight. I embraced that value and bought some Vibram Fivefingers. They are awesome. It took a few months for my feet to fully adapt to them but I have never looked back. I used to be flat footed. There were almost no arches on my feet, and years ago, a Chiropractor of mine had given me orthotics to help with that. My knee pain went down to about 10% of what it was, and my

Down with the sickness?

It’s the time of year when the sickness is upon us. That’s right. The sun is starting to hide. Kids are going back to school. Temperatures are dropping and rain is coming more frequently. All of that combines to stress the immune system and colds and flu are now in season. It can be hard to avoid getting the sickness. No one enjoys it, at least no one I know. My kids are both showing some symptoms already and have missed a day of school here or there. When you get sick, how do you take care of yourself? Do you think of going to your chiropractor? Well, you probably should. The symptoms that you get that are so horrible

How I beat the asthma monster

My personal asthma story: I’ve mentioned before how diseases are basically a constellation of symptoms that we have labeled as a disease. That’s the case with a lot of diseases that result from inflammation, inflammatory diseases. Asthma is one such disease. I was diagnosed with asthma at about 5 years of age. When my parents saw me running around outside with my chest up under my chin they realized that I had a problem. I just didn’t want to stop playing. So, they took me to the MD, and I was diagnosed with asthma. And the treatment is to force the bronchioles open during spasm with a bronchodilator, which is basically a stimulant, that forces a sympathetic responses in the

Posture is not as important as you think

Posture, not as important as you think Chiropractors in general are big fans of posture. It makes sense, doesn’t it? When you think about a chiropractor, helping to adjust the spine, it makes you stand up straighter and feel better, right? When I meet people and they find out I’m a chiropractor, they almost immediately stand up straighter. And seeing someone with poor posture immediately makes one think it should be improved. But standing up straighter is not as important as you think. Or rather, it’s important, but not for the reasons you think. You see, when you have poor posture, there can be any number of reasons why it is the way it is. But all of those reasons are simply

5 Reasons That Have Nothing to do with Pain

Reasons to get adjusted that have nothing to do with pain Improve your mood – I see it every single day. People are happier when they get adjusted, feel less anxious/nervous, and less depressed. There are neurochemical changes in the brain which happen almost instantly, and the effect can last for days afterwards. I know that I am always in a better mood after getting adjusted. Prepare for a sporting event – Want to be your best for a tennis match? Or bowling? Or golfing? Get adjusted. The adjustment will make sure your nerve system is coordinating all of your limbs to work together, improving strength, conditioning, lung capacity, oxygen delivery, and hand eye coordination. This is why athletes use
