Chiropractic is NOT an alternative Chiropractic is often labeled as an alternative healthcare, or alternative medicine. But it’s not an alternative to anything! The art of the Chiropractor is its own, unique, effective discipline, designed to help you function at your best. Medicine is something else. It is, inherently, the treating of disease and symptoms to keep you alive. Medicine is fantastic at that, and when I’m bleeding out or broken, that’s where I go. When my daughter broke her arm recently, I took her to the ER, because that’s what they are good at. I also, when she could handle it, adjusted her arm and her spine to help her manage the fall. Those disciplines are two different things.
Babies and Kids You’ve heard me talk about adjusting pregnant women recently, and that’s super important. But what about those little bundles of joy after they are born? Do we just leave them to the wolves? No! Of course not. Chiropractic care is very important for the little munchkins. Going to my favorite pediatric website, the ICPA, you’ll find all kinds of case studies showing resolution and/or reduction of symptoms related to the following: Allergies Asthma ADHD Colic Ear infections Wetting the bed Nursing and latch issues Digestive troubles, pooping And many more What about safety? Pediatric Chiropractic is different than that which is performed on adults. For one thing, there is almost never a high velocity type adjustment. You
Pregnancy is a joyous time, but it can also carry a lot of stress. William’s Obstetrics categorizes the three main causes of dystocia, or failure to progress, as Power, Passage and Passenger. Watch the video to find out how Chiropractic can help with each of these. Or read below for more information. Failure to progress is often a result of medical intervention, and of not allowing the body to do what it knows how to do. The woman’s body knows exactly how to birth a baby, and often times, we get in the way when we try to help. Chiropractic works to get what’s in the way, out of the way, and allow natural childbirth to occur. Power Birth is
Exercise Demystified – A Brilliant Life Playshop Get ready! There will be a Brilliant Life Playshop coming to Brilliant Life Chiropractic in Tacoma. It will be next Wednesday, the 28th, at 7:00 pm. The address is 708 Broadway, in Tacoma, in suite 170. There is a lot of misinformation about exercise. We all know that we should do it, but what should we do? How much of it? What shouldn’t we do? There are also a lot of myths about exercise. What it can do for health, what it can’t do, what will happen to you if you exercise, and what won’t happen. Next week, on Wednesday, the 28th, at my office in Tacoma, Brilliant Life Chiropractic, I’ll be going
What is Healthy? Looking at the way medicine views health, it’s not hard to reach the conclusion that health is when you have no symptoms. When you are pain free, that is healthy. When you don’t have a fever, that is healthy. But is it really? No Symptoms is Death! I would submit the opposite, that having no symptoms is more like death, than health. I really can’t say this message enough, so I thought another blog post would help. Listen to your body! Don’t just make it stop talking to you. Is your goal healing? If it’s not, go ahead and stop reading. If your goal is just to make yourself numb, this post is not for you. But
What is BGI? How does it help your Tacoma Chiropractors at Brilliant Life Chiropractic adjust you? This video will help to explain the philosophy of this important framework to adjusting. The description afterwards will help to clear it up further. What makes Brilliant Life Chiropractic different? Every Chiropractor is unique, and each offers something different to help with your healing. Some forms of chiropractic are more reductionist in nature, looking strictly at pain, neck pain, back pain, etc. These generally do not also help with how to integrate health into your overall life. Some chiropractors look at the body more holistically, but still see the body as being under assault by forces that will always seek to tear you down.
Why so often? Some people complain about Chiropractors, both from within the profession and from society at large. That complaint goes like this: once you start going, you have to keep coming back for the rest of your life. Is that really the way it is, or are Chiropractors just after your money? Well, I think people can always benefit from Chiropractic care. But do you know why? If chiropractic worked on the idea of a bone out of place, it might work to get one adjustment alone, but it doesn’t. Chiropractic is about stress, and how that stress stores in the system. It’s about how the body learns patterns to deal with that stress, and how those patterns show
There are two philosophies with regard to health care. Spend any time with a practitioner here in Tacoma and you can probably tell which one they operate from. Whether it is mechanism or vitalism. Mechanism perceives the body as a machine, albeit a very complex one. What are the qualities of a machine? They tend to breakdown, and require regular maintenance to fix them. We replace these parts with little difficulty in the event of breakdown. The problem with the machine is often due to a failure in one part that, when replaced, will fix the problem. This would be analogous to organ transplants in the human body. It is, in effect, very symptom based, and the symptoms are often
I prefer not to take medication. This is due to a number of things, including a personal philosophy and also scientific facts about drugs. I believe that the body functions better without micromanaging our chemicals. Most of those chemicals also have euphemistically termed “side” effects that are then managed with more chemicals. Also, more often than not, they treat merely the symptom, and not the disease itself. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation, a necessary component in healing. It may also reduce sperm count in otherwise healthy men. Proton Pump Inhibitors to reduce acid reflux can cause worse problems as they allow for greater rates of bacterial infection and digestive problems. Use of antibiotics can interfere with normal gut flora leading to leaky
Ask different chiropractors, or doctors, what the goal of a treatment is. The answer you get won’t vary too much in the broad sense: it’s usually to treat a disease, get rid of pain, or otherwise remove a symptom. But I look at Chiropractic in a different way. Indeed, all truly wellness endeavors aren’t seeking to correct a problem necessarily, but to allow the body to function normally. This method of thinking operates on a different assumption than most western medicine practices. It assumes, at the most basic and fundamental level, that there is an inherent wisdom to the functioning of the body that is continuously trying to keep it healthy, to enhance our health, and to have us function
